Capping off the Year!

Fans of Aloha Tofu Baseball caps have sent us pictures from far & wide wearing our hats!

The picture to the left is of Travis Steele on top of Mount Bierstadt in Colorado.  The picture below is of Travis and his family all wearing Aloha Tofu baseball caps on a family backpacking trip in Wyoming.  Travis and his family came to tour the Aloha Tofu Factory when they visited Hawaii.  He says he loves our tofu and wishes he can get some at home.

Thomas Carson says he wears his Aloha Tofu baseball cap almost everywhere!  He wanted to take a picture wearing his cap in a unique location – he felt Phoenix was too boring.  So he sent a picture of himself and his dad (below) golfing in Sedona during the 4th of July weekend. It’s a great scenic shot!

Peter Mills, of Florida, sent us a photo collage of himself wearing his Aloha Tofu cap in Bhutan, Brazil, French Guiana, Nepal, Georgia & Florida.  Wow, that man gets around!

Ryan Ettinger (below) is wearing his Aloha Tofu cap in front of the Middle Tennessee State University where he is in his Junior year there.

His friend, Brandon, is wearing his Aloha Tofu cap next to the marker that designates the geographical center of the State of Tennessee.  It was erected in 1978 by the Rutherford County Historical Society to memorialize the 200th year of American Independence.  Gosh, the things you learn from a picture!

You can purchase your own Aloha Tofu baseball cap from our store on the website.  If you do, send us a picture and we’ll blog about you too!

The Heart and Soy of Tofu

How much does the average person really know about Soybeans?  Not much.  Most people know that it’s used to make tofu and edamame.  Do people know what soybeans look like?  Probably.  Where it comes from?  Maybe.  Why it’s so important?  Hhhm.  Can we eat it?  Sure.  Is it healthy?  Definitely!

Soybeans grow on plants that range from 7 inches to 7 feet high.  They have a pod, stem and leaves that are covered with fine hairs.  The fruits are hairy pods that are 1 to 3 inches long and cluster in groups.  The seed coat or “hull” comes in various colors like black, brown, blue, yellow, green, etc.

Soybeans are a species of legume native to East Asia.  The U.S. is the main producer of soybeans, producing about 32% of the world’s supply.  Aloha Tofu gets our soybeans from the mainland.

Soybeans are the 2nd most valuable agriculture crop in the U.S. (after corn) and used mainly for animal feed and oil.  The rest are used for soymilk, tofu, shoyu, miso, natto & tempeh.

Did you know that for people to eat soybeans, they must be cooked with “wet” heat to destroy the trypsin inhibitors.  Basically, raw soybeans are toxic to humans.

Did you also know that soybeans are considered to be a source of “complete protein.”  According to the PDCAAS (Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score), soy protein is the nutritional equivalent of meat, eggs & casein for human growth and health.

Soy is a health promoting meat “re-placer” that studies say lowers blood pressure & cholesterol in men, benefits women’s heart & bones, stabilizes blood sugar, lowers diabetes risk, and protects against kidney & heart disease and prostate cancer.

It’s probably more than you ever wanted to know about soybeans…but it is the heart and soy of our business!

Farmer’s Market

Farmer’s Markets may have started out as a trend, but it is fast becoming a way of live.  According to the City & County of Honolulu website, more than one million people shop at the 25 market sites each year.  Farmer’s Markets’ provide a symbiotic relationship for the local producers and the people of Hawaii.  They help to support the farmers, fishermen, and chefs while allowing people to buy fresh, Hawaii made & grown products at low costs.  Another perk is that you can find many ethnic fruits, vegetables, and dishes not normally found in the large retail stores and restaurants.

Aloha Tofu enjoys taking our products to the Farmer’s Market.  Almost every other Friday, you can find a special selection of Aloha Tofu products at the Makiki Christian Farmer’s Market.  Since June 2010, we have been featuring our 10 oz. Tofu, Oboru tofu, Okara, Sesame Rice with Soybeans, and Tofu Mousse.  In fact, due to the increased popularity of our tofu mousse we have had to increase production each month.  We are even getting requests from the restaurants and our factory customers.

Stop by today, starting at 4:30 pm, and try our products!  Especially the Tofu Mousse in original (with Lilikoi or Blueberry sauce), Coffee & Pumpkin (just in time for Halloween)!

Tofu Mousse

Everyone has preconceived notions of what a tofu factory makes.  Tofu in blocks.  Well, here at Aloha Tofu we are expanding our horizons.  We believe that you can make almost anything with tofu.  We have been testing our theory – experimenting – and have come up with a hit…Tofu Mousse.  It is a delight!  Light, creamy, soft & delicious.

Recently, we have been taking our Tofu Mousse to the Farmer’s Market at Makiki Christian and have developed a fan base.  Get your Tofu Mousse today in plain and chocolate flavor here at Aloha Tofu Factory or at the Farmer’s Market starting at 4:30pm.

Also available at the Farmer’s Market today are Oboro Tofu, Okara, Sesame Rice with Soybeans, and the 10 ounce firm tofu.

Agedashi Tofu

At a time when so many of us are scrimping to make ends meet, it can be especially comforting when we’re able to make homemade versions of the tasty treats offered at many izakaya.  Agedashi Tofu (deep fried tofu) is one such popular item that is actually quite simple to make:

After draining and slicing tofu into desired size, dust with potato starch or corn starch and either deep fry (as pictured above) or fry and flip in a more shallow pan until the crisp coating turns light brown.

Agedashi dofu is complete in a simmered tentsuyu sauce or even a simple dashi broth, depending on your preferences.  It is typically garnished with chopped green onions, grated daikon and ginger and katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes) but again, you can use whatever you enjoy.  This flavorful, easy dish will be crisp and warm on the outside but soft on the inside–it’ll be as though your favorite izakaya made a home delivery!

Do you have a special way of making your Agedashi Tofu extra delicious?  We’d love to hear about it, leave us a comment or send an email!

We won’t have agedashi dofu with us while we’re at the Makiki Community Church Farmer’s Market this evening, but we will have a bunch of delectable treats available, including:

  • Tofu Mousse (Plain and coffee-flavored)
  • Sesame Rice with Soybeans
  • Oboro-dofu
  • Okara

We’ll be there today (Friday, September 10th) from 4:30-7:30 pm, so please stop by!
